ePplugfest to test the interoperability of e-portfolios
The first ePortfolio plugfest ePplugfest will be organised to present the state of the art of ePortfolio technologies and demonstrate and explore the possibilities for interoperabilitybetween ePortfolio platforms and other information systems (you are also invited to contribute to the Interoperability Framework).
The ePplugfest will include:
- A forum for technicians responsible for the implementation of ePortfolio projects
- Demonstration of interoperability and cooperation between different ePortfolio platforms and information systems
- Validation of an ePortfolio interoperability framework
- Demonstration of technologies useful for future ePortfolio development
Activities
| Activity | Objective | Location | |
| Demonstration of current projects | a series of 5 selected projects have five minutes to present the current issues and a panel of specialists discuss the possible solutions | Understanding interoperability issues in different contexts: awarding bodies, school districts, universities, employment agencies, etc. | Amphitheatre |
| Interoperability tests | Vendors and implementers of ePortfolio solutions demonstrate that their system is interoperable using defined scenarii | Demonstrating the benefits of interoperability for individuals and organisations | Refectory |
| Interoperability demonstrations | 2 or more vendors and implementers of ePortfolio and ePortfolio-related solutions demonstrate a particular approach to interoperability | Exploring current solutions that could be generalised in the future | Refectory |
| Technology demonstration | Solution providers demonstrate a technological solution that would be useful to ePortfolio platforms | Exploring future developments that haven’t been implemented in ePortfolio environments | Amphitheatre |
| Workshops | Presentation of current standards and hands-on for engineers | Understanding interoperability issues and the role of standards | Classrooms |
Scenarios
The ePplugfest will be organised around a series of scenariosGeneric interoperability scenarios
| Description | Pre-conditions | Post-conditions | Process | |
| 1. | A learner registers to a learningenvironment and personal information is extracted from her eP |
|
Personal information read by target platform Behaviour changed according to ACCLIP information is a + | eP is imported into (posted to) target system |
| 2. | A learner wants to change ePortfolio host | A valid eP with LIP + ACCLIP information IMS-eP compliant system (including EPICC) | eP exported and reimported successfully – no loss of data | a valid eP is imported in different eP platforms ePs are exported and reimported to different platforms |
| 3. | A learner wants to exchange dynamically information between an ePortfolio service and an another service (Web service scenario) |
A valid eP with LIP + ACCLIP information IMS-eP compliant system SOAP or XML/RPC compliant system | Personal information read by the other service | Personal information synchronously exchanged between two services |
| 4. | A learner receives a Diploma Supplement that should go in her eP | A valid DS | The DS has been integrated in the eP | The DS is imported (or posted to) an eP |
| 5. | A learner wants to access from an ePortfolio to an another eLearning services (SSO scenario) |
SSO compliant system (CAS, Shibolet, SAML, ID-FF) | The learner access is personal information in the other eLearning service without re-authentification | Two services (one eP platform and a LMS for example) using both the same SSO process |
| 6. | A buyer wants to check that the system is conform to specs | TELCERT test suite A platform | Test passed successfully | eP platform provides a ZIP package which is tested against specs |
| 7. | … |
Specific interoperability scenarios
Specific scenarios are for 2 or more organisations that want to demonstrate how they interoperate to provide a service to their users. They could include: Use of digital IDs and federation of services| 8. | A learner wants to federate different eLearning services (Federation scenario) |
Liberty alliance ID-FF compliant system | The learner has build a federation from his services. | Learner federate two services (one eP platform and a LMS for example) using the federation process and after show the SSO access between them |
| 9. | Digital identity and privacy scenario | Liberty alliance ID-FF and ID-WSF compliant system Or OASIS XDI/XRI compliant system | Services can read specific data (authorised by the user) but not the other | Learner gives authorisation between two federate services two access specific part of his personal data |
Linking two different types of ePortfolios (e.g. IMS-EP and FOAF)
Integrating an eP in a VLE or LMS
Linking an eP platform with a job search engine (like Monster, or an employment agency)
| 10. | A job service access learner resume | IMS-eP or HR-XML compliant system | Job seeker can do a request with the Job search engine and find a corresponding learner resume | Resume eP is imported into (posted to) target system and available for query. |
Specific functional scenarios
These scenarios are to demonstrate how the different platforms support the different learning episodes. They can be used to measure the differences between the different platforms. For example, cross-referencing evidence with standards of competence is a standard activity for those using portfolios in the UK-NVQ system. How do the different platforms support this activity? Collecting and organising evidence/documentationWe could also have things around:
