EMINENT 2009 Conference organised in Lithuania
EMINENT, European Schoolnet’s annual conference was successfully organised in Vilnius, Lithuania from 26-27 November 2009. Participants from 30 countries, including teachers, policy makers, experts and industry stakeholders, attended the two-day event comprising a series of debates, plenaries and workshops. The conference was opened by Gintaras Steponavicius, Minister of Education and Science of Lithuania.
The conference consisted of four plenary sessions with key speakers including:- Valentinas Stundys, Chairman of Committee on Education, Science and Culture, Lithuanian Parliament
- Gintaras Steponavičius - Minister of Education and Science, Lithuania
- François Taddei – University Paris Descartes Medical school, France
- Tim Rudd – Senior Researcher – Futurelab, UK
On day one, a session was organised on the theme of creativity. It featured a presentation of the OECD report: "Training creative and collaborative knowledge-builders: a major challenge for 21st century education". Keynote speaker for this session was François Taddei, a French researcher and expert from the University Paris Descartes medical school.
Two workshop sessions were organised, with parallel tracks covering:
- Developing and accrediting teacher and pupil competencies (track a)
- Supporting new pedagogies through digital learning resources (track b)
- European networking for eSafety and eSkills (track c)

Another highlight of the conference was the eLearning Awards Ceremony on 26 November. Ten winners were awarded prizes for their schools. A total of €40,000 in cash prizes and equipment worth a similar amount was given to winners. A gala dinner was organised in Belmontas, a picturesque restaurant outside of Vilnius. Sponsors of the eLearning Awards this year were ACER, Promethean, SMART Technologies, eInstruction, Elluminate, Intel, Young Digital Planet, CISCO and Microsoft. Additionally, Fourier Systems, provided financial support.
A blog and a podcast were available for participants at the conference. The EMINENT 2009 blog includes speakers’ biographies, presentations and pictures of the event . The EMINENT 2009 Podcast features interviews with speakers, experts and eLearning Awards winners. Apple supported the podcasts by providing financial and technical support. Additionally, participants could tweet about the event using the hashtag #eminent09.
The conference was organised in cooperation with the Lithuania Ministry of Education and Science/ Centre of Information Technologies of Education (CITE).
