STEPS validation workshop with experts at the European Commission
The Study on the impact of TEchnology in Primary Schools (STEPS) project is coming to an end after nearly 18 months of research and analysis exploring how ICT is impacting on everyday teaching and learning in European primary schools. The study provides the most detailed picture ever taken of ICT impact on European primary education. The first results and key findings will be presented and discussed with high level experts and stakeholders at a workshop (www.steps-workshop.eu) co-organised by European Schoolnet and Empirica which will take place on 25 June 2009 in the premises of the European Commission in Brussels.
The workshop’s objectives are:
- to inform relevant stakeholders about the findings of the study;
- to identify key messages and recommendations;
- to identify next steps and further areas of research and gaps in understanding
- to collect expert and stakeholder views on the findings.

Participants will discuss key findings emerging from the evidence gathered in a comparative analysis and 30 country briefs, one for each country reviewed in the study (EU27 plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein).

The focus will be on:
- study objectives and results: aims and process; empirical evidence on ICT use and impact in primary schools; research evidence on ICT impact on schools; national strategies for ICT in primary schools;
- examples of good practice and case studies: good practice school survey results; case studies results;
- overall conclusions, recommendations and development perspectives.

Furthermore, a round table followed by plenary discussion will bring together major representatives of the analysis’ different level perspectives: European policy perspective, national policy perspective, primary school perspective, and parent perspective.

The background

Based on an analytical framework, the STEPS final study provides evidence from a number of quantitative and qualitative surveys:
- a literature review (analysing more than 60 studies);
- a quantitative survey of head teachers and teachers in 27 European countries;
- a policy maker survey;
- a school survey;
- examples of good practice;
- more than 25 case studies from 12 countries

The information and data gathering process was carried out in the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, thanks to over 40 national correspondents from the 30 countries.

STEPS was commissioned by the Executive Agency of the European Commission (EACEA) and is run by a consortium of European Schoolnet (EUN) and empirica Gesellschaft für Kommunikations- und Technologieforschung mbH.
